At the New Jersey Bariatric Center there are several qualifications for bariatric surgery to consider when deciding if weight loss surgery is right for you.
1. Am I morbidly obese?
There are several medically accepted criteria for defining morbid obesity. You are likely morbidly obese and thus a surgical candidate if you:
Weigh more than 100 lbs. over your ideal body weight,
Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40
Have a BMI of over 35 and are experiencing severe health related conditions , such as high blood pressure or diabetes, related to being severely overweight, or
2. Dedicated to lifestyle change and follow-up.
3. Unsuccessful with other medically managed weight-loss programs.
4. Over the age of 18.
5. No uncontrolled psychological conditions.
6. Absence of drug or alcohol abuse.
7. Patient must have documented support of their immediate family.
